In the middle of the 19th century the chemist Jacques Blockx set out to re-create the pure rich oil colours the masters had previously used. To this day his recipe and production methods continue to produce this range of highly acclaimed colours made using the finest and purest pigments - which gave all colours a score of 7 or 8 on the 8 stage blue wool scale for light fastness.
Two different binders are used to produce the colours - linseed oil binds the iron oxide, earth and black colours, whilst poppy oil is used for the rest - neither yellow or crack on drying. All colours are meticulously milled and ground on the millstones and this quality of consistence, brilliance and luminosity made the colours the colour of choice for artists such as Magritte and Dali.
