GENUINE PAPYRUS
(Papyros, gr.) is an Egyptian product that is still produced today in the same hand-made manner used since it was first invented (approx. 3000 BC).
Papyrus is made from the pith of the papyrus bush (Cyperus papyrus, from the family of Cypress grasses) and consists of thin, long-cut strips of the broadest width obtainable. These are laid over each other at right angles to form a lattice structure that is then pressed and pounded. The starchy sap secreted in this process binds the strips upon drying to form a brilliant elastic structure.
In antiquity, papyrus served as a paper used for letters, scientific, religious and literary texts. It was frequently decorated with colourful illustrations.
Papyrus finds application today mostly for painting, printing, decoration and model-making. It can be painted with tempera, acrylics and watercolours and performs well with pastel chalks and felt-tip pens.
Lettering in ink is a classic favourite. Equally suitable for lino and screen-printing. Papyrus is very decorative and finds many applications, for example, for painting with a distinctive effect, certificates, covers for books and folders, as wrapping paper for gifts, as a bookmark, and as a calendar.
