WHITING BASE

This whiting base serves as the base for making a chalk primed surface, such as that used in icon painting. To prepare the ground from chalk this must be mixed with Rabbit Skin Size (code 29075).

Ground made from insufficiently heated lime is less permanent and is susceptible to cracking; overheated lime loses its stickiness. The chalk undercoat is generally made from 1 part lime to 10 – 20 parts chalk, adding plenty of water until a creamy consistency is reached. Chalk primed surfaces should be applied in several layers.
