Gerstaecker Pure Balsam Turpentine Oil is a distillate obtained from conifer balsam. Pure turpentine oil is the most important solvent in oil painting. It is a very volatile, oil- and resin-dissolving agent.

Possible applications of Gerstaecker Pure Balsam Turpentine Oil:

  • ideal for thinning oil colours, varnishes, painting mediums and varnishes
  • suitable for cleaning tools
  • solvent for dammar, mastic, aldehyde resin, etc.

Gerstaecker balsam turpentine - I always preferred turpentine to the alternatives. I find it dilutes oil paint with complete satisfaction. I like to use it with safflower oil, damar varnish to create useful mediums for oil painting. It provides a good wash solution if one needs to do a lean paint sketch, or a wash is required in a painting. It works well with bee wax, alklyd mediums, oils, oil paint extenders and of course it is ideal for cleaning the brushes. I personally would never use white spirit, can't stand it. I even found my self sensitive to the alternatives to turpentine!
There is a lot of makes on the market, but I have found Gerstaecker Balsam Turpentine to be more than adequate. I can quite easily rate it amongst the top trade names.
