Japan's HOLBEIN - named after Hans Holbein the Younger, the renowned artist of the German Renaissance - was founded in 1900. In the early 1920s, it introduced the professional extra-fine HWC ARTISTS' WATERCOLOUR™ paint.

And since then, that watercolour has enjoyed a ★★★★★ reputation worldwide - in fact, it is incomparable! It is a Western-style watercolour - that is, more transparent - that feels like a classic, slightly more opaque Japanese watercolour under the brush. You can work with it decisively and precisely, with slow and thoughtful strokes. At lower dilution with water, sometimes even your brush strokes remain.

The pigments are more finely ground than in most other watercolours. And no oxgall, animal by-products or other dispersants are used. This gives you more control over your paint and produces bright colours with unrivalled brilliance and intensity - characteristic of Japanese watercolours - and purity. Perfect for the subtlest of washes as well as powerful full colours.

Product specifications of HWC ARTISTS' WATERCOLOUR™ by HOLBEIN:

  • highly pigmented
  • extra-fine - very finely ground and rubbed
  • binder: gum arabic
  • free of ox gall or other dispersing agents, such as synthetic polymers
