GIUSTO MANETTI Dewaxed Shellac Flakes are suitable as a polish for precious metal leaf gilding, and as a lacquer for furniture and frames. The resulting film is transparent, glossy, semi-rigid, and moderately amber-toned.
The wax naturally present in shellac has been removed. By dissolving these flakes in diluted ethanol, you can make your own shellac solution. Once dry, the surface takes on a clear, transparent finish — a shade lighter than the wax-containing variant.
To use:
Soak the shellac flakes in diluted ethanol (alcohol content 95%+); after approx. 24 hours, the flakes will have completely dissolved. Filter the solution to remove sediment and impurities — the shellac solution is then ready for use. Apply the shellac solution with a soft brush — for example, a Hake spalter — apply a thin, even coat to a clean, dry and grease-free surface; allow the coat to dry completely in a dust-free area: dust that gets into the wet shellac coat cannot be removed and will remain unsightly.
Store your mixed shellac in a sealed glass jar out of direct sunlight - it will keep for several months; filter the solution again before reusing it
TIP! Work on a completely clean, dry and grease-free surface — with shellac, good preparation is just as important as the coat itself.
Dilution percentage, application method and quantities applied may significantly affect workability time frames. The most suitable application methods should be determined experimentally on the basis of support used and desired result.
TIP! Store in a cool, dry place in its own container, closed, and away from direct light and heat. The ideal temperature is 15-20° C with humidity under 50%. The product is not cold sensitive but can be damaged by heat.
