GIUSTO MANETTI RABBIT SKIN GLUE is a traditional, high-quality animal hide glue used primarily as a base size in traditional gold leaf gilding (gouache technique) and for preparing gesso.
The glue is supplied as flakes, and provides the necessary adhesive strength and elasticity needed to seal surfaces and bind gilding materials.
Proper preparation requires dissolving the glue without compromising its bonding strength:
1. Mix the granules or flakes with a specific ratio of cold water (typically 1 part glue to 10–13 parts water). Allow it to soak overnight or for a minimum of 12 hours so it fully expands.
2. Gently warm the soaked glue in a double boiler (or a bain-marie) to liquefy it completely. N.B. Never let the glue boil, as boiling destroys its adhesive properties.
3. Apply the liquid solution while it is still warm.
