GIUSTO MANETTI Dewaxed Water-Based Shellac Flakes are suitable as a polish for precious metal leaf gilding, and as a lacquer for furniture and frames. The resulting film is transparent, glossy, semi-rigid, and moderately amber-toned.
Because pure shellac does not dissolve in plain water, "water-based" flake variants are specifically treated with an alkali (like ammonia or borax) during manufacture so they can dissolve in a water-based solvent.
To use:
Mix roughly 1 part flakes to 4 or 5 parts warm, distilled water. Place the flakes in a glass or plastic container and pour the water over them. Stir the mixture periodically. It can take several hours to a few days for the flakes to completely liquefy.
Optional additive: adding a few drops of household ammonia or borax to the water can help the flakes dissolve much faster and more completely.
Store your mixed shellac in a sealed glass jar out of direct sunlight.
Dilution percentage, application method and quantities applied may significantly affect workability time frames. The most suitable application methods should be determined experimentally on the basis of support used and desired result.
TIP! Store in a cool, dry place in its own container, closed, and away from direct light and heat. The ideal temperature is 15-20° C with humidity under 50%. The product is not cold sensitive but can be damaged by heat.
