SENNELIER d'Artigny Oil Pastel Fixative has been specifically created for oil pastels and wax crayons. It allows sheets to be laid on top of each other without sticking, which is ideal for transportation and for framing.

This SENNELIER d'Artigny Oil Pastel Fixative also protects the surface from dust, which can simply be wiped off with a soft cloth or brush. It is based on a synthetic resin and alcohol, and does not penetrate or dissolve the colour. SENNELIER d'Artigny Pastel Fixative is sold in 400 ml aerosol cans.

Key features:

  • completely colourless
  • non-yellowing
  • slightly shiny
  • dense

Works brilliantly. Dries fast and leaves oil pastels less smudgy. I use oil pastels in sketchbooks and this spray helps stop the colour transferring when the pages are closed.
The only downside is the stuff smells awful and you need to use it in a well ventilated area as it “may cause damage to organs” - yikes.

At last...a real fixative that works! - This does exactly what it says. It coats the pastel and produces a surface which is durable and slightly shiny. In other words it makes the oil pastel look like a varnished oil-painting. Like a retouching varnish it enhances the tonal values, however, so go carefully.

The instructions are clear and correct...it does work best in succesive light coats rather than one heavy spray. Best of all once varnished/fixed it is possible to continue with further layers of paint or pastel without disturbing the work underneath.

Incidentally this also works well with watercolour, and will also fix sprayed-on underglaze colours on ceramics making it easier to load such works into a kiln without finger-marks. Presumably it will also fix chalk pastels in the same way.
