This Chalk Whiting is the basis for the production of traditional chalk ground or gesso, and is also used for icon painting. For the preparation of gesso, it is essential to mix it with hot glue (rabbit skin glue, item code 29075).

Paint from insufficiently heated glue is less durable and easily gets cracks, overheated glue loses its adhesiveness. The gesso is usually prepared in a ratio of 1 part glue by weight :2 part whiting chalk, with the addition of water to achieve a creamy consistency. Gesso should be applied in several layers.
