Kuretake SHINJIRUSHI Ink Sticks are traditional solid black inks designed for Japanese calligraphy and water-based ink paintings. When used for general work, the ink has a black colour with a reddish-brown tone.

The ink is made by grinding the stick on an inkstone with water to create a pigment-rich, lightfast ink suitable for various artistic applications where fine brushstrokes and vivid colour are desired. The sticks consist of traditional soot, glue, and fragrance. These Kuretake SHINJIRUSHI Ink Sticks are suitable for both professionals and amateurs, and can be used with a brush or dip pen. They are presented in paulownia boxes.

To use:

  • place a coin-sized amount of water on a flat part of your inkstone
  • grind the ink stick in a circular motion, applying some pressure until the ink reaches your preferred consistency
  • guide the ink to the pool area of the inkstone and repeat the process until you have the desired amount of ink
  • after each use, gently wipe the ink stick with a cloth or paper to remove any remaining moisture before storing it in its paulownia box

The following Kuretake SHINJIRUSHI Ink Sticks are available:

  • 50273 = size 1, 15 g, Shinin: width 19 mm x length 73 mm x thickness 11 mm, suitable for kanji and ink painting.
  • 50274 = size 1, 15 g, with a deep and elegant ink colour, the moderate amount of bleeding gives it a three-dimensional effect
