This Aerometer is for measuring the density of acids, as is common in etching. The measuring range is 1.00-1.50: 0.005 g/ml. N.B. It does not include a thermometer.

Operating instructions for aerometers:

  • The areometer should be handled with care as it is fragile. It should be dry and clean.
  • The measurement is carried out in a transparent cylinder of the appropriate size with a diameter of approx. 1.5 cm larger than that of the areometer.
  • The liquid to be tested must be free of dirt and bubbles and should be stirred slowly immediately before the measurement in order to eliminate temperature layers.
  • The measurement should be taken at the reference temperature indicated on the hydrometer.
  • The density of the liquid depends on the temperature, so for accurate measurements it is necessary to determine the temperature in order to be able to make a correction if necessary. This can be done with a separate thermometer.
  • The surface tension must also be taken into account for accurate measurements.
  • An aerometer gives accurate readings for the liquid or surface tension for which it is calibrated.
  • The cleaned areometer may only be touched above the scale.
  • When immersed in the liquid, the areometer should not be wetted more than 5mm above the reading point, as the measured value would be falsified by adhering liquid.
  • If the aerometer has reached the equilibrium position and floats freely without touching the wall of the standing cylinder, the reading can be taken after the hydrometer has been stationary (about one minute).

How to read the aerometer:

  • To do this, look just below the liquid level so that you can see an elliptical base area around the stem.
  • If you now look a little upwards, the elliptical base becomes a line
  • The reading point (reading below) is now at the intersection of line and scale.
