Spectrafix Degas spray fixative is based on a classic recipe used by the nineteenth-century French impressionist painter Edgar Degas. It is made from casein, water and alcohol.

Casein — also known as calcium caseinate — is the main protein found in milk. It is one of the oldest and most stable binding agents. No other binding agent allows your colours to come into their own so well, with all their characteristic properties. TIP! And best of all... there are no toxic fumes or odours — so you can use it indoors!

TIP! This fixative comes in a handy spray bottle. You can easily spray an ultra-fine mist manually — without propellants or other chemicals.

You can use it as an intermediate fixative, on which you can continue working after drying — and it dries quickly. This allows you to build up deep colours in multiple layers. In addition, it provides extra grip for subsequent layers on smoother surfaces, such as thicker layers in some coloured pencils and oil pastels. Please note that it is not a final varnish!

This fixative is ideal for loose pigments, soft pastels, oil pastels, chalk, graphite, coloured pencils, charcoal, watercolours, gouache, casein and ink. It is also perfect for mixed media. You can use it to fix other media in your work, for example when working with encaustic.

To prevent them from smudging, you can also use it to fix signatures and grisailles, which you can then continue to work on in oil or acrylic paint. TIP! Casein forms a permanent chemical bond with oil paint. That is why, when coloured with pigments, it has been used for centuries as an undercoat for oil paint — just like egg tempera. Please note that it is not suitable as a final top coat on oil or acrylic paint.

Furthermore, this fixative adheres excellently to all kinds of surfaces: paper, YUPO®, prepared or unprepared canvas, ceramics, glass, leather, wood and stone.
