Clairefontaine PASTELMAT® Pastel paper pads contain 12 sheets of 360 gsm acid-free coloured paper designed specially for pastel artists. The pads contain assorted coloured sheets: pad No 8 contains cooler colours, No 9 warmer colours.

This paper has a unique, velvety cellulose fibre surface. Its specialised texture holds multiple layers of pastel without needing fixative, allowing for vibrant, detailed work with dry media, charcoal, and, due to its water resistance, wet techniques as well.

Key features of the Clairefontaine PASTELMAT® Pastel paper pads at a glance:

  • unique, non-abrasive surface that is coarser than velour but softer than sandpaper.
  • 360 gsm heavy-duty cardstock, suitable for heavy layering and, to some extent, wet applications.
  • enables multiple layers without saturation
  • eliminates the need for fixative between layers
  • excellent for soft pastels, pastel pencils, charcoal, and PanPastel.
  • gentle on blending tools and fingers
  • acid-free, lightfast
  • reduces dust
  • pads glued at the top
  • glassine interleaf sheet included

N.B. Loose sheets and pads sealed in plastic may bulge slightly after unpacking — this is not a fault, but an unavoidable consequence of the production process.

This is caused by the coating — the surface you work on — being applied to the substrate — the base paper — whilst the substrate is still damp. This ensures optimal adhesion between the coating and the substrate. Due to the drying process, combined with the grain of the substrate, the paper may bulge slightly, which becomes apparent upon unpacking.

This does not affect the quality or the handling properties of the paper. You can allow it to acclimatise with the bulge facing upwards — possibly weighted down with a weight — or secure the paper whilst working, for example with paper clips.

This paper is highly regarded by professional artists for its ability to maintain colour vibrancy and allow for delicate, detailed techniques.
