Lascaux Wash Resist is a unique, water-soluble acid resist designed as part of the solvent-free Lascaux Acrylic-Resist Etching (ARE) system.
This resist is painted onto intaglio etching plates to create delicate washes and tonal effects comparable to traditional watercolour or tusche washes. It is highly effective on a variety of metals, yielding particularly impressive results on copper and brass.
For proper tonal control, Lascaux Wash Resist must be used in combination with Lascaux Aquatint Spray Resist (item code 55833). Before use plates should be prepared, grained, degreased and dried before the Lascaux Wash Resist is applied.
When left to stand, the components of the solution separate; the medium must therefore be shaken vigorously for 5 minutes before use to ensure the particles are well distributed. It is also necessary to mix the medium repeatedly on the palette or in the container whilst painting. The Lascaux Wash Resist has a consistency similar to ink and can be painted, sprayed, dripped or poured onto the plate and worked with a wide variety of tools, such as Chinese brushes, feathers, etc. The ground is applied in concentrated form or diluted with water, either directly onto the plate or on the palette, to achieve an even broader spectrum of wash effects. It is advisable to practise the painting techniques using different tools and dilutions on a series of test plates.
